The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra strives to ensure that all children have the opportunity to make music a part of their lives. Hands-on, in-class exposure to musical instruments, access to professional musicians, and concert experiences enhance and enrich school's existing music curricula.
Concerts for Schoolchildren
The Symphony performs annual education concerts for more than 3,200 elementary schoolchildren from Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Taking place during the school day, these educational performances expose students of varying socioeconomic backgrounds to symphonic music in the theater setting. Teacher education guides and musical recordings are provided in advance to help teachers prepare students for the concert experience. The Symphony strives to introduce elementary schoolchildren to live music performed by a professional symphony orchestra; to teach students about the four instrument families; to engage young listeners with multi-media elements, such as theater, dance, magic or puppetry; and to reinforce that music is fun and accessible.
The 2019 Concerts for Schoolchildren will feature Carnival of the Animals accompanied by Bob Brown Puppets. The concerts will take place on Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9th at 10:30 and 11 AM respectively. To download an informational flyer with more information, click here.

Musicians in the Classroom
ASO offers a variety of unique and rewarding programs in which our professional musicians visit local schools to engage students in fun, hands-on musical experiences.
Throughout the month of May, ASO musicians representing the string, woodwind and brass families of the orchestra travel to Anne Arundel County schools to visit third grade classes for a hands-on introduction to the instruments of the Orchestra. Students are provided the opportunity to handle and play the instruments with direction from professionals. This up-close and personal exposure to instruments assists students in deciding which instrument they might want to play in their school's band or orchestra. The Music Van program has contributed to a significant increase in the number of students choosing to participate in instrumental music at participating schools.

Teams of ASO musicians regularly visit Anne Arundel County schools to assist music teachers by providing individual coaching and instruction to instrumental music students. This opportunity to work directly with professional symphony musicians is eagerly anticipated by students and teachers alike. The Adopt-a-School program culminates in a year-end concert featuring the students and ASO musicians playing side-by-side conducted by the ASO's Music Director. Local school orchestras have greatly improved through their Adopt-a-School participation, demonstrated by higher scores at school orchestra competitions.
