ASO DEIAB Statement:

 

At the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, we are committed to transforming the orchestral landscape by fostering an environment where every voice and background enhances our artistic expression. Through our dedication to equity and inclusive education, we strive to empower and inspire the next generation of musicians, ensuring that our symphonic legacy is as diverse and dynamic as the communities we serve. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging (DEIAB) practices are woven throughout the ASO, including:

 

Programming: Throughout his 20-year tenure with the ASO, Maestro José-Luis Novo has consistently championed the works of underrepresented composers, bringing their unique voices to our stage. We are proud to feature guest artists from all backgrounds, reflecting our belief that diversity enriches the artistic experience and deepens our connection with audiences.

On Stage: While we recognize that there is still progress to be made in creating greater diversity among our musicians, the ASO is unwavering in its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. We actively seek out and support talented musicians from diverse backgrounds, using innovative approaches to ensure our orchestra better reflects the rich diversity of our community.

Education: The Annapolis Symphony Academy (ASA) exemplifies our dedication to inclusivity in music education. By offering scholarships and resources to students from all walks of life, the ASA provides opportunities for young musicians to thrive. Our students, who represent a wide array of backgrounds, embody the future of symphonic music and reflect the diversity that is integral to our mission.

Staff: At the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, we are proud to uphold a workplace where inclusivity is not just a policy but a practice. Our personnel decisions are made with respect for every individual, regardless of race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, medical condition, veteran status, age, citizenship, or any other characteristic protected by law. We believe that a diverse team fosters creativity and innovation, driving us forward as an organization.

Board of Trustees: The Board of Trustees at ASO is committed to reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve. We actively seek out individuals from varied backgrounds and perspectives to ensure that our governance is as inclusive and forward-thinking as our artistic mission.

Volunteers: Our volunteers are the backbone of the ASO, and we are dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. We strive to engage volunteers from all walks of life, recognizing that their diverse perspectives and experiences enrich our work and our community.

Vendors: The ASO is committed to partnering with vendors and service providers who share our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We actively seek out and support businesses owned by individuals from underrepresented groups, ensuring that our impact extends beyond the concert hall and into the broader community.
