Jake Fewx

Tuba Principal

What city are you living in now? Hyattsville, MD

Where did you study? The University of Oregon and Yale School of Music.

What is your favorite piece of music? I would have to say a tie between Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz and Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony. Both are such powerful, emotionally charged, and innovative works which are constantly on repeat for me.

What do you enjoy in your spare time? I love reading, running, playing video games, and seeking out good food.

What is your fondest Annapolis Symphony memory? It would have to be our low brass section’s performance of Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto during the 2021-2022 season. It’s not often that the low brass gets to be the featured act so it was very meaningful to be able to share our sound and what we do with our audience!

Tubist Jake Fewx is a performer and educator hailing from Sherwood, Oregon. Currently based in the Washington D.C. area, Fewx has been a member of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra since 2019. He has received degrees from The University of Oregon and the Yale School of Music studying under JáTtik Clark, Michael Grose, and Carol Jantsch.

Fewx’s music career has brought him around the country to perform in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has collaborated with renowned groups such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, National Philharmonic, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Lancaster Symphony, Eugene Symphony, The Orchestra Now, Astoria Music Festival Orchestra, and Puerto Rico Summer Music Festival Orchestra, as well as holding a fellowship with Orchestra Next during the 2015-16 season. Additionally, Fewx is an acting member of The Brass Project, a brass sextet specializing in curating and commissioning new chamber music for brass.

An accomplished soloist, Fewx has earned awards and high praise for his playing. Most notably, he was awarded first prize in the 2018 Leonard Falcone International Tuba Artist Solo Competition. Earlier that same year, Fewx was selected as one of the winners of the Yale Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition (the first tubist to receive the honor), performing as a soloist with the Yale Philharmonia the following season.

In his free time, Jake enjoys reading, running, playing video games, and seeking out good food.
