Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Announces Program Change for “Forces of Nature”

Contemporary voices, the oceans of the Americas, and two iconic works featured in November 6–7 concerts

(Annapolis, MD) — October 5, 2026 — The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) announces a program change for its “Forces of Nature”concerts on November 6 and 7 at Maryland Hall, bringing together an emerging young composer, a contemporary violin concerto inspired by the oceans and cultures of the Americas, and two sweeping works by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky.

The change reflects Music Director José-Luis Novo’s artistic vision for the ASO’s 65th Anniversary Season, “In Nature’s Realm,” which explores the many ways composers have drawn upon the natural world as a source of inspiration, reflection and transformation. Novo has described the season as an invitation to listen more closely and rediscover the connections between music, nature and one another.

Opening the program will be Luke Soneral’s An Overture: The Mouse and Its Shadow, a new work by a pre-college composer who has already garnered  national recognition. Its inclusion underscores the ASO’s commitment to presenting not only the great works of the orchestral tradition, but emerging composers who are shaping its future.

Francesca Anderegg

Notably, the program features Reinaldo Moya’s Vestida de Mar (A Violin Concerto), performed by acclaimed violinist Francesca Anderegg, who premiered the work in 2019 and for whom it was written. The work was commissioned by Greenwood Music Camp and the Lakes Area Music Festival.  Inspired by Pablo Neruda’s Canto General, Moya’s concerto draws upon the flora, fauna, geography, culture and history of the Americas. Its three movements evoke the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Caribbean Sea, using these bodies of water as metaphors for different dimensions of the American experience.

The program also includes Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest, a sweeping musical transformation of Shakespeare’s drama in which storm, sea and human emotion become inseparable. The concert concludes with Igor Stravinsky’s Divertimento from The Fairy’s Kiss, his elegant tribute to Tchaikovsky inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice-Maiden.
