What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Hanging out with my kids, friends, and orange tabby cats Copper and Ginger.

What is your fondest Annapolis Symphony memory? The ASO Spain Tour in July 2022, including going on two life-changing car rides across the countryside to Granada and Madrid.

 

Broc Mertz is a graduate of The Peabody Conservatory of Music and Johns Hopkins University where he received his Bachelor and Graduate Performance Diplomas in Double Bass. Former teachers include Harold Robinson, Robert Kesselman, Paul Johnson, Peter Paulsen, and Timothy Raub.

A skillful and versatile bass player, Broc’s performance engagements have included concerts with Peter Cetera, Earth Wind and Fire, Leonard Slatkin, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Joshua Bell, Midori, Christopher O’Riley, Dave Brubeck, Amy Grant, Micheal W. Smith, and the Contours, among others.

Originally from the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania, he was a founding member of the Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra. Later he was a member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Joseph Primavera, and participated in two international concert tours. He also traveled with the Peabody Preparatory on concert tours of Iceland, Scotland, England, France, and Spain.

Broc has been a member of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra since 2001. He is the bass instructor for their Adopt-A-School program and the Annapolis Symphony Academy, working with students at Annapolis Elementary, Middle, High School, and Bates PVA Magnet Middle School. He also currently serves as Adjunct Bass Faculty at Anne Arundel Community College.

In addition to his work with the Annapolis Symphony, Broc performs with the Bach in Baltimore concert series; the Delaware, Maryland, and York Symphonies; and many other local, and regional ensembles in the Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and DC areas.

Broc resides in Severna Park, MD with his two children. He is an avid collector of Hard Rock Cafe pins, having visited over 95 different cafes around the world.
